Cummins

In the heart of the Lower Eyre is the ‘can-do’ town of Cummins. Surrounded by sweeping fields of golden wheat, green barley, and yellow canola crops this close-knit town consistently punches above its weight.

Our Town Cummins operates as a health promotion charity that takes a localised approach to promoting health, wellbeing, and connection. We do so by partnering with community to build on our collective strengths and learn why people may be facing mental health challenges; supporting activities that create an inclusive and supportive community for everyone in Cummins; building capabilities of people living in and around the township of Cummins; and by emphasising the importance of education, awareness, and early intervention as protective factors that prevent mental distress.

The Our Town Cummins vision is simple: A mentally fit community where the collective voice of lived experience underpins decision-making when it comes to championing mental wellbeing.

Our Town acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we gather, and pay respects to their Elders past and present.

Our Town Cummins Guardian

Our Town Cummins is led by, informed by, and for the benefit of the whole community. We partner with our community to understand why some people might be feeling isolated or disconnected to build on our strengths and create an inclusive and supportive community for everyone.

Our work falls under two main approaches;

1. Promoting & supporting wellbeing and mental health

2. Collaborating and taking a community approach

Our Town Cummins strives to be a leader in innovative health promotion strategies in a regional setting. By developing and implementing new local approaches - in partnership with others - we aim to develop effective and creative solutions that support the whole community to be well. Some of the ways we do this include:

  • Training local community members to support each other with their mental health and wellbeing as community first responders.

  • Holding activities that promote awareness and education about preventative health.

  • Running a physical community space for groups of people to come together to connect, share experiences, and build social wellbeing.

  • Supporting peer to peer support groups for people to connect through shared experiences.
